Hurricane Fiona Relief Efforts for Puerto Rico: How You Can Help

by - 9/21/2022

As you may have already heard, on September 18, 2022 Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Fiona. As a Puerto Rican [luckily outside the island when the hurricane struck] I cannot just sit around and do nothing to help. I have gathered a few ways in which you too can help.

"Hurricane María marked the lives of all Puerto Ricans. In September 2017 a group of supportive people from the west and diaspora self-summoned to form a brigade to respond to the immediate necessities of the communities after the passage of María. During those efforts we gathered debris, opened paths, and handed out groceries, water filters, awnings, and other necessary essentials to propitiate a recovery process after this emergency. Thanks to the support of hundreds of people and organizations we were able to reconstruct 14 residencies affected by Hurricane María.

Three years after the passage of María, we have responded with coordinated support in the wake of the earthquakes in the south and west and we continue working to propitiate the development of our communities through mutual support, art, music, and activism. Click here for more information."

There is nothing we can do to avoid natural disasters, but there IS something we can do to help those in need. Anything, even a dollar, makes a difference. If you are not able to donate, you can always donate your time and volunteer or share this information with others. It might take us years to go back to what we used to be, but together we shall rise again. Thank you.
